Foreign Aid the 'Vote Clincher' for Christians?

The CEO of World Vision, Tim Costello, says he’ll be promoting Labor’s policy on foreign aid in the lead up to the federal election. He says the difference between the government’s position and the Opposition’s stance on foreign aid is ‘140 thousand lives’ saved in the Asia region.

Reverend Costello believes the issue also has the potential to become a ‘vote clincher’ for Christians. Do you agree?

Do you feel strongly enough about the extra percentage points that Labor has pledged to foreign aid to base your vote on that alone? Will foreign aid be a vote clincher for you?

If it’s not, what issue will ‘make or break’ your vote?

Ross:

I'm not a staunch supporter of any political party as such, but Labor's foreign aid policy is very appealing. As a wealthy country, surely we have a moral obligation to support developing countries, and Labor seems to recognise this better than the Coalition parties. I'd happily forgo my tax cut, which I don't need, to see more investment, not only in foreign aid, but also in health, education, the development of export-creating industries, and long term solutions to the energy crisis and climate change. Rather than short-term political fixes or election sweeteners, Australia needs leadership that offers long term solutions to the challenges our country faces.
