How do you feel about carbon emissions?

How do you feel about the climate change reports we keep hearing?

Do you feel hopeful—that things indeed will change?

Do you feel worried—that we’re just not moving fast enough?

Do you feel overwhelmed—by the magnitude of the subject?

Or do you simply feel confused?

Much of the debate is at the federal decision-making level. Apart from changing to energy-efficient light bulbs, properly insulating your home, and perhaps converting to a solar-powered hot water system, there’s not a lot of practical, specific options for you and I being talked about much.

Perhaps you feel empowered. You’ve changed your lifestyle—or are planning to.

I was just reading about CRAGS – Carbon Rationing Action Groups in the UK – where a group of people meet together to keep each other accountable to cutting their household emissions by about a quarter – they even tell each other off for taking too many foreign holidays.

You may or may not be part of something like this.

Is it inevitable that our high carbon lifestyles will have to change?

Andrew:

Carbon emissions are a concern in our current society, what with cars, electricity, the products we buy and everything else. One thing that gets me is why the NSW government wants to privatise the electricity retailers and rent out the generators? Surely no private company is going to have the incentive to reduce electricity usage by everyone or put solar panels on people's roofs. I personally think the only way these would be encouraged is for the retailers and generators to remain in government hands, since the government is already making huge dividends out of these businesses, it should reduce its profits from them to invest in reducing carbon emissions through cleaner electricity technology being used and promoting public awareness (such as was done to reduce water usage in Sydney). Also the government goes on about not having money to invest in other areas of society and so attempts to justify this sale - but NSW has a AAA credit rating, why dont we use it for the good of the people of NSW by borrowing to fund other areas and leaving electricity alone, and since being government owned there may be some incentive for the companies to encourage people to become more energy efficient.

We have installed energy efficient light globes in our house, attempted to reduce standby power usage, we catch public transport to work/uni where possible, walk to the local shops sometimes. I mean yes these are all great in reducing our little part of carbon, but its industry and businesses that really needs to get behind the carbon emissions reduction as they play a significant part in the current emissions, also would be leading the carbon trading scheme, and need to educate people to do the same. Yes i understand it does all come down to dollars again but if we want to save the planet for future generations, its something that needs to be looked at now before we do more irreparable damage.
