Open Up - Who Is Jesus to You?

‘Who do people say I am?’ It’s the famous question asked by Jesus of his disciples. Back then the popular answers were that he was John the Baptist, Elijah or one of the ancient prophets returned from the dead. ‘What about you,’ Jesus then says to his followers. ‘Who do you say I am?’

It’s an ancient question with contemporary relevance. Everyone has a view of Jesus! Scholars, historians, mothers, businessmen. The great religious traditions all have a view about Jesus. So I thought tonight would be as good a time as any to Open Up discussion on your view of Jesus.

What are the popular answers today?

• Some see Jesus as a Jewish mystic, proclaiming a message of universal love and peace.
• Some see him as a political revolutionary, who was killed for challenging the system.
• Islam sees Jesus as a prophet, later superseded by Mohammed.
• Buddhism sees him as a wise man, an enlightened being.
• Jehovah’s Witnesses see him as the archangel Michael in bodily form.
• Some see Jesus as the Son of God, God-in-the-flesh, who came to die for our sins.

So, who do you say Jesus is? Put it into your own words and tell me.

If you’ve been with us for a while you’ll know that Open House explores life, faith and culture from a Christian perspective. If you’ve been with us for a while I hope you’ll also have recognised that we talk to anyone irrespective of beliefs. I’d also be interested to know if your view has changed over time too.

Who is Jesus to you?

Well, to be completely honest, Jesus is something I am never going to understand, at least while I am in this world. I mean, the guy is amazingly complex. He says the most confusing things and, sometimes, the most hard things. And Jesus to me is really difficult to get close to. It is possible but it's difficult, for me at least. You can't hug him, you can't touch him, you feel like you're talking to yourself and it doesn't seem like life is actually under his control. Stuff happens.

Putting all this aside, I have known about Jesus my whole life and I have heard the whole love thing ad nauseum, but I can't imagine my life without him. Sometimes I feel like I don't wanna trust him anymore, I just want to forget him to make my life easier, but I'd still want to live by his rules. So I keep living by his rules (not all the time obviously) and I keep talking to him now and then. Now I am starting to understand the importance of prayer and I have been praying fairly often through out the day. Sometimes I feel really close to him, but more often I feel distant. I want to get closer without the effort of reading the bible and praying for hours. I guess if I really loved Jesus I would want to do that.

I guess I'll keep going and keep trying to get closer and one day I might actually be someone who can do amazing things through Christ. And one day I might love him so much that I will do things for him that I would never do for anyone else. That will be my aim.

Looking back, this is really confusing, but this is who Jesus is to me and what I am/hope to be to Him.

Amit Aryal:

I believe that Jesus is God himself who came to us in human form to save us from the tentacles of sin and death. Not just my personal sin but also the the inherit sin of mankind. According to the scriptures he had authority to pardon our sins. This leaves no doubt in my mind and millions of Christians worldwide that he was indeed a deity. Beyond this identity he has many other identities revealed in the bible. The particular one I like is a shepherd that looks after his flock with much care and delight. His identity is so vast and so eternal that it will take internity to completely reveal him. He will always be a mystery to us.

Felicity Handley:

Jesus to me is the Great I Am. The Great
Jahovah of the Old ;Deuteronomy 6:4 "Hear, O Isreal the Lord our God is one Lord." revealing himself by progressive revelation
as Jesus Christ in the New Testement. No where in scripture is there dialogue between Jesus and God. Yes Jesus prayed to the father it was his humanity that had to be in subjection to the spirit. His name Jesus
means Jahovah has become our salvation.
John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
John 1:14 "And the Word was made flesh and dwelt
among us,...". A man can not redeem another man
as we are all born in sin and shaped in iniquity, because of the sin of Adam. God who is Holy is without sin undestood that the only way to redeem man was to wrap himself in flesh
concieve himself in the womb of Mary the incarnation, to be born of woman as the man Christ Jesus the miricle interwining of Divinity and humanity "all the fullness of the Godhead bodily dwelt" to become the perfect sacrifice to reconcile the world unto himself. The shedding of pure blood had to be spilt for our redemption for forgivenress and cleansing of our souls. The blood is applied in our lives by baptism in Jesus name for the remission of sins. The name of Jesus Christ must
be envoked over us in baptism just as in the the old testement the blood of the lamb was applied over the doorposts of all the Isrealites who were captive in Egypt the death angel passed over every home were the blood was applied. Peter recieved the true revelation when the Lord asked him who he was. "you are the son of God" Peter(Petros meaning small rock in Greek)
"upon this rock (Petra meaning big rock) I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" The rock is Jesus Christ upon which stand all the prophets and the apostles doctrine the Bible as we know it.The book of Acts is the birth of the Church and Peter preached Repentence and baptism in Jesus name the name above ANY other name and reminded them
of what was spoken of by the prophet Joel that in the last days God said he will pour out his spirit upon all flesh, the precious infilling of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in other toungues. The Born Again experience.
Jesus Christ is the one and only true God the Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end, ancient of days, the author and finisher of our faith, the ever existing one.
