Dilemma: Bridezilla and the Bridesmaid

Sally has a friend who’s getting married soon…but she’s in despair, because her otherwise fun and vivacious friend is suddenly totally obsessed about weddings. It seems she’s not even thinking about the marriage itself, rather just the trims of the day

Sally fears her friend is becoming a ‘bridezilla’ and doesn’t know quite how to handle the wedding plans without it taking over her life too.

She’s been asked to be bridesmaid - but it seems this all-consuming wedding is going to involve so much time, energy and money that she’s wondering if she even wants to be involved. Particularly as they’ve only been friends for a couple of years.

Can you say no to being bridesmaid? How do you handle a friend who becomes an obsessed bride-to-be?

Depending on who’s getting married, there can be a great deal involved in being a bridesmaid… (so I’m told)… There’s the financial cost - paying for the dress, the dress fitting, the shoes, the hair and makeup;

Then often there’s helping organise an engagement party, a kitchen tea  or bridal shower, a hen’s night, sometimes a bridesmaid’s breakfast, plus a wedding rehearsal and possibly a wedding party dinner after that… For someone whose life is already busy, it’s no easy gig…

• Is it unhealthy for someone to become consumed by their wedding plans?

• How do you show excitement for your friend– while keeping boundaries on how much the wedding will encroach on your own life?

• How do you rein in friends who become obsessed with their ‘big day?’

• Should you say something to your friend, at the risk of them becoming defensive?

• And indeed - can you say no to being a bridesmaid? Is that an unforgiveable sin?
