The influence of Charles Darwin's ideas... What do you think?

This week we heard from two Christian thinkers on the topic of Charles Darwin, his theory of evolution, and the impact of that theory on our world today.

Dr Tom Frame, author of Darwin in the Antipodes, spoke on Darwin's influence on many areas of society, and believes that God used evolution as a tool in making the world.

Dr Carl Weiland, managing director of Creation Ministries International, spoke of why he believes the world was created in six 24-hour days - taking a literal interpretation of Genesis, the first book of the Bible.

Now it's your turn - Whether you believe in six day creation, or in evolution as one of God’s tools in making the world … or whether you don’t believe there’s a God at all, and that life is purely the result of an evolutionary process…  Either way, I’d like to know - How did you come to that viewpoint?

Let's hear your personal stories about the journey that brought you to your current understanding of the origin of the world…

(NB: if you have any disparaging remarks to make about either of our guests or their views, or about any of our other callers or bloggers, this is not the place to make those comments.... )

• Perhaps you take a certain view because that’s what you’ve been taught from a young age, and everything you learn you add into that understanding…

• Or maybe you had a particularly belief as a child or a student in school, but changed your mind one way or another, after wrestling with things as an adult…

• What was your journey? Let us know...

Pia Horan:

My concern lies not who is right and who is wrong in this debate but rather with the way scientic explanations, whether based on Creation Science, Theistic Evolution and its many derivatives acknowledging a devine creator and their counterpart; evolution - are taught in schools and other educational institutions. An intelligent approach to me seems to allow students to engage in an open dialogue, where viable scientific theories can be explored in a, hopefully, non-biased environment. Teaching students to learn to weigh up arguments and counter-arguments and to make up their own minds is far more productive teaching than to manipulate such conclusions by biased teaching. Honest science acknowledges that there are vital gaps in all theories and where these theories have been turned into black and white scientific doctrines, the learning environment has become manipulative and contrary to true principles of learning. There is nothing wrong with believing that the world was created in seven days, especially as the Bible says so. To bring this argument into the arena of science and to dispute scientific principles quoting the Bible is not science at all. Science uses recognised scientific principles to explore scientific issues. It has its own jargon. Trying to fit science into the realm of ideology and/or religious doctrine is a travesty of scientific research principles. That's where both the schools of Creation Science and Evolution go astray. One is adamant that the notion of a Creator and Creationism is "Cancer of the Brain" (Steve Jones), the other camp possibly is trying to squeeze science into the literal biblical text. Why don't we relax a bit and explore possible answers to this dilemma, with the notion that "now I know in part..."1Cr 13:12b. We need to show respect for those who genuinely have, are and want to explore this scientific area and allow them to make their own conclusions. If they discover the presence of the Creator in their search, it is by GRACE, not through scientific reasoning. May our prayers be that God would impart His grace to many more scientists and students of science

Andrew Mackinnon:

In Exodus 20:11 (NKJV), God Himself says:

"For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it."

In Exodus 20:1, it says, "And God spoke all these words, saying:", so it definitely was God who spoke the above words.

The Hebrew word for "day" in the above verse of Exodus 20:11 is exactly same as the Hebrew word for "day" used in Genesis chapter 1. The meaning of this word is a normal 24-hour day. So here we have God Himself declaring that He created the heavens and the earth in six days.

It is clear that the apostle Paul thought that Adam was a real historical person from reading Romans 5:14. It is also clear that he thought that Eve was a real historical person from reading 2 Corinthians 11:3. Other references which substantiate the historicity of Adam and Eve are 1 Corinthians 15:22, 1 Corinthians 15:45, 1 Timothy 2:13-14 and Jude 14.

Virtually all fauna (including human beings) have external symmetry along their length. It is statistically impossible for mutations arising out of 'evolution' to have given rise to this symmetry. Evolution is a lie. It is also an obvious lie. The extent to which Christians have swallowed this lie is evidence of just how little discernment many Christians currently have to reject falsehood and embrace truth. The culture that has led to this lack of discernment was imported from the USA. That ship is now sinking. It is time to get off the ship.

The church in Australia is currently in a malaise. We have Christian 'leaders' spouting the heresy of evolution and there is a prevailing attitude among the Baby Boomer church leadership and among the membership that it is not 'cool' to quote Scripture in order to substantiate orthodox Christian views.

Evolution has been used to destroy the church in Australia. The reason this issue comes up again and again and again and again is that it is a festering sore that needs to be dealt with. To date, the church leadership in Australia has not adequately dealt with it. Over the next few years it is going to be up to Generation Y to lead the church back on to a stable footing. However, unless they read the Bible regularly and study it, they will also fail.

"Man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord." Deuteronomy 8:3 (NKJV)

Intellectual conceit is a very interesting thing. It leads modern Christian people to promote falsehoods such as evolution because it makes them feel as though they have mastered a difficult and complicated subject. However humility seeks after truth and finds it. Unless the church in Australia is able to function independently of the popular culture of deception (and intellectual conceit) in which it finds itself, it will fail.
