Let’s hear your thoughts on this internet filtering proposal. The idea has stirred up an incredible amount of debate with many on arguments both sides.
Let us know what you think.
DISCUSSION POINTS
• This debate’s not just about people who want sexually explicit material to be freely available… There are other concerns too…
• Some people are also worried about freedom of expression. They worry that the government may use the filter for political censorship, etc.
• Others are worried about the filter being inaccurate, or basically over-zealous, and blocking legal sites… Is this a worry? Or is the risk worth it for the sake of protecting children?
• There’s also the argument that parents should be the ones deciding what our children can and can’t watch. Do you agree? Should parents make those decisions and the government stay out of it? Will parents become lulled into false sense of security?
• Or - is it the role of our government to in fact step in and make some decisions on a national level about what children can and can’t access?
• It seems that if any filtering goes ahead, it will be optional anyway. Is that effective enough? Should our government put more controls on the internet, in the same way that we do with television for example?
• Should there be more censorship of what adults are allowed to view on the internet – considering that explicit material may be the cause of some adults moving into things like child abuse…
