Open Up - Handling the Narcissists in Your Life

We heard this week from the Christian psychologist Dr Les Carter about the traits of a narcissist... And how we can all at times display those self-centred type tendencies if we're not careful. He also gave us some great pointers on the best ways to handle the narcissists in our lives.  Now I want to hear from you.

• If you know someone in your family or your workplace perhaps, who is a touch narcissistic - self absorbed, manipulative or controlling - Tell us what strategies you've used to handle that.

• Obviously this isn't an opportunity to name names and take revenge... What I want to hear is some success stories that will help our listeners out. Tell us what has worked for you.

• What was effective? Have you found a way to walk that fine line between understanding and compassion, while maintaining some firm boundaries?

• What have you found is NOT effective? Dr Carter said that getting upset, or just letting that person have their way, is not helpful in the long run as it only encourages narcissistic behaviour.

• And in light of what you've just heard in our interview with Dr Carter, are you thinking differently about how you will maybe handle those kind of people from now on?

• Also, did it help to hear how a narcissistic person becomes the way they are? Does that shed some light and help you to think of those people more compassionately?
