We heard this week about the latest research into Generation Z and their attitudes to life... They're said to be more serious and conservative than the 20-somethings we call Generation Y. They're also said to be environmentally responsible, aware of social justice issues, and are "digital natives" - born into a high tech world - and will race up the corporate ladder as older generations retire. What's more, they're even spiritually open!
If you've spent any time observing teenagers, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one....
DISCUSSION POINTS
• Maybe you're a parent or a grandparent of teenagers ... or a big brother or sister. What do you think - Are today's teens a different breed than those of ten or 20 years ago? What differences and attitudes have you observed?
• One researcher Bernard Salt says that Gen Y, now in their 20s, are "wanters, demanders and idealists", but Gen Z will be more balanced and realistic, and may even grow up to fix the things Gen & messed up. They're also meant to be more socially aware, and a bit more serious than their big brothers and sisters. Have you seen this change in the teens and tweens that you know?
• If you're a teacher that's been around for a while, you'd probably have some good insights... Have you seen these changing attitudes and expectations as new generations of kids come through the ranks?
• What impact has technology in the classroom had on your students?
• Some say Gen Z are quite pampered and protected, even overindulged at times... have you observed this? Is all the indoor, computer-based media, producing kids who don't know how to enjoy the outdoors?
• Maybe you're a youth worker who has observed a number of generations growing up... Is it true that the new breed of teens is changing?
• Or do all teenagers have the same basic traits?
• Give us your insights into Generation Z.
