Is There Enough Support for Families with Disabled Children?

The huge pressures faced by parents of disabled children have been highlighted this week with the Anglican Church announcing the closure of Kingsdene boarding school in Sydney.  While the school's closing will have a massive impact on the families of kids who go there, it's also revealed the desperation of parents around the nation who simply don't have adequate access to residential and respite care services.  In the last two years, 32 families in NSW alone handed their disabled children over to DOCS because they simply couldn't cope any more.

If you have a child with a disability, how difficult is life for you?  Do you feel like you have enough support?  If not, what would make your life easier?  What are the main stresses on your family?   What impact has having a disabled child had on your relationship with your partner if you're still together?  What about on your other kids?

Our chat with Mary Lou Carter from Carers Alliance openned our eyes to the unique pressures of families with a disabled child. Please share your story also.
