What's Happening To Our Boys?

Why are increasing numbers of boys suffering from body image and self-esteem problems? Why do they feel worthless without the latest brand-name toy, game or T-shirt? What impact are violent video games and our sexualised climate having on them?

What's happening to our boys? Author Maggie Hamilton shared her research on adolescent pressures with us last Sunday, with information that no parent, uncle, aunt or educator should have missed.

Pamela:

One of the things I've noticed in my younger brother's and his friends lives is that there's a culture of making horrible things funny! Sexism, racism, rape, violence - it's like anything can be made a joke of. There's a number of forums they go on that breed this kind of culture, and websites and these jokes are referenced on tv and other media. Phrases like "It's not rape if you yell 'surprise'" and "Get back to the kitchen" originate here.

It's like they've become desentsitised. Girls too. I'm 20, and I've grown up with things getting progressively worse---I can't imagine what it's like for kids, 5 and 6 year olds, living in our world.
