THE OPEN HOUSE '365 GRATEFUL' PROJECT
In May 2011, Leigh Hatcher did an Open House interview with Hailey Bartholomew, about "365 Grateful" - a documentary she's making with her mother Toni Powell, exploring the power of gratitude.
Hailey told us how in early 2008, in an effort to fight depression, she went to ask a nun for advice. The nun told her that the secret to happiness, was to be thankful. So Hailey started a photographic project called 365 Grateful where she took one Polaroid a day of something she felt grateful for. The discipline of having to look for the good things every day changed her life in multiple ways, and wondrously impacted the lives of many others.
Hailey put her project up on Flickr and hundreds of people began to do their own 365 grateful projects, as word spread and the project went viral. Individuals, schools,
magazines and radio stations took on the project and it just keeps growing. Many of those touched by doing The 365 Grateful Project themselves have written to Hailey about their
changed lives.
HOW TO GET INVOLVED
Now, we're running our own 365 Grateful project, by posting your 'grateful' pictures on the OpenHouseCommunity facebook page. You can get involved by emailing us a JPG picture, new or old, of something you're grateful for. It might be a sunrise, your favourite shoes, or a landscape picture of a place that holds special memories. Perhaps it's your puppy, grandmother, nephew, or the friendly man at the corner shop. It might even be a cup of coffee, the teapot, or your favourite artwork/ CD/ book/ tree/ car. Your toolbelt/ surfboard/ oven/ lampshade. Your guitar. A piece of lego. Whatever!
Send your email to mail@openhousecommunity.com.au, and include a sentence or two about what the picture represents and why you are grateful for it.
For a whole year, from July 2011 to June 2012, we'll choose one new photo to post each day on Facebook. We can't wait to see what you're grateful for!
